  • FIRST Robotics Competition Season Kickoff

The 2016 Season of the FIRST Robotics Competition will kick off on January 9th.

The 2016 FRC season "officially” began on January 9 with 114 Kickoff events across the United States and in Australia, Canada, China, Israel, Mexico, and Turkey.  These events not only announce the Game Challenge for the new season, but also provided teams with the opportunity to gather and compare notes, exchange ideas, make friends, find mentoring teams, learn the game, pick up their Kit of Parts and get geared up for the exciting competition season.  In addition, several of the Kickoff Events hosted workshops on such topics as LabView, Game Strategy, fundraising, etc., enabling students, mentors and coaches alike to learn new skills or increase their proficiency.

In Illinois, we hosted two Kickoff Events.  One was hosted by Illinois Tech Robotics at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Hermann Hall in Chicago, and the other was hosted by Bradley University's College of Engineering and Technology at Bradley's Renaissance Coliseum in Peoria.

    Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago

    8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (CST)

The 2016 FIRST Robotics Competition Kickoff was held on the campus of Illinois Institute of Technology in Hermann Hall located at 3241 S. Federal St., Chicago, Illinois.

The 2016 FIRST Robotics Competition Chicagoland Kickoff was hosted by Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and Illinois Tech Robotics in Hermann Hall on IIT's campus. In addition to the Kickoff Broadcast, they had full scale field mockups, various workshops for rookie and veteran teams, volunteers available to help teams inventory their Kit of Parts, a mentor workshop, a programming session, and more. Hermann Hall can comfortably handle over 800 people, so all teams were welcome; the more teams there, the more exciting the Kickoff! Parking details, maps, and other event details were sent to registered teams prior to the event.

    Bradley University, Peoria

    9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (CST)

Hosted by the Bradley University College of Engineering and Technology and sponsored by Caterpillar Inc. Parking is available in the adjacent deck. Bradley will offer campus tours for any interested individuals either prior to the 9 AM session or following the kick-off. If interested in a tour, contact the Admissions office at 309-677-1000. The focus of the Bradley University College of Engineering and Technology is undergraduate engineering education. The engineering college has 950 undergraduate students in a university of 5000 undergraduates in five colleges, which allows us to provide an educational experience that contains many interdisciplinary aspects through collaborations with the other colleges. The campus has an atmosphere of open inquiry and exploration. This enhances the sound technical foundation that our engineering and technology students receive.

Teams, if you are planning on attending future Kickoff events, remember that you must register in TIMS for that  Kickoff Event.  For those of you who are unable to attend a Kickoff Event, or are hosting a Team Kickoff Party, NASA normally provides an online broadcast.
